Filomena Booth: Glowing Abstract Paintings

By Lisa Orgler in Featured Artists > Acrylic Paintings

Abstract paintings bring out unique feelings for different people. The acrylic paintings of Filomena Booth instantly made me feel warm inside. . . their glow and charm was captivating. So I looked further.

Former high school art teacher and current Texas resident, Filomena now has the joy of being a full-time professional artist. She has created paintings for the interior design industry, is represented by two galleries, and has sold her work around the world to corporate and private collections.

Over the years Filomena has experimented with many techniques and materials to create her existing body of work, including acrylic glaze layering, stamping and scrubbing. She states that “to create a powerful and moving abstract image is a gratifying experience for any artist. To have that image appreciated by the viewer is an even greater joy”.

The painting below is what initially drew me to Filomena’s art: it is a simple composition with three horizontal bands. The deep red bottom band gives a feeling of earth, and the blue above references the sky.

What makes this painting more intriguing is the texture seen throughout those bands. It looks as if Filomena scratched the surface to reveal a white glow beneath. Letters (or maybe words) are growing out of the ground signifying a possible hidden story.

This next painting, titled Urban Spring, once again catches your eye with warm, bright colors. The grid pattern formulates a plan view of an imaginary city, while the bright colors throughout celebrate spring. I love the additional metal-like pieces of rustic, horizontal lines. This strengthens the idea of an industrial area incorporated into a beautiful urban core.

Filomena’s abstract images are painted on what she calls a “deep gallery-wrap canvas”. This simply means that the painting extends around all four sides of the canvas frame. This technique allows the viewer to search for more beauty beyond the initial front scene.
