The “Loving Vincent” Film Project – Bringing Van Gogh’s Paintings to Life

For the great doesn’t happen through impulse alone, and is a succession of little things that are brought together. -Vincent van Gogh

Hugh Welchman is a man with a vision. . . oh, and he also runs an animation studio. And Welchman’s vision (you could also call it an incredibly audacious goal) has brought him to Kickstarter to make a beautiful film about the intriguing and tragic story of Vincent Van Gogh.

This in itself would be a notable purpose, but that’s not all. The truly remarkable part is that “every frame of this film is an oil painting on canvas, using the same technique in which Vincent himself painted.”

Sound intriguing? Just view a snippet of the film, Loving Vincent, and you will instantly be mesmerized by this project.

This Kickstarter project is attempting to raise money for the actual animation process. The raised funds will allow Welchman to hire and train 40 painters, who in turn will create 56,800 paintings. These paintings will BE the animation in the film, bringing the energy of Vincent Van Gogh “swirling [to] life on the big screen.”

Van Gogh’s inspiring and controversial story will be told through his paintings and BY the characters within them. As you watch the movie, “the intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death.”

Welchman describes his animation team as “going further than anyone else would reasonably expect us to go to make [movies that are] a unique and brilliant experience for the people watching them.”

They have definitely achieved that again with this project.

Welchman’s Kickstarter project has a monetary goal of £40,000. At the time of this writing, they’ve already raised £32,167 which is truly incredible—and SO close to the amount they need to finish.

Anyone can contribute, which is why we’re telling this story today. If you would like to support them, please visit the Loving Vincent kickstarter page prior Friday, March 14, 2014 and help them complete their project.

This is a wonderful way to bring a timeless story and art to life. Click the link above to learn about all the great perks and rewards you can receive by donating to this project. Together we can make this movie a reality!

For many of us, art is easily accessible: it's on our walls, we go see it in local galleries and museums—or we simply create it ourselves. For others, however, art is only a distant idea seen briefly on television or read about in books. And the chance to create art? It just doesn't happen.

Art educator Jennifer Christy dreams of changing that for her community in southeast Texas.. . . read more
