How to Create a Quality YouTube Video that Effectively Markets Your Art

By Alyice Edrich in Art Business Advice > Art Marketing Tips

Quite a while back I wrote an article explaining how to insert a YouTube video into one of your blog posts. Then I showed you how to make your YouTube channel a marketing powerhouse.

But have you ever wondered what makes for a great video? Something that really draws viewers in, and promotes your art?

If so, read on! I’ll be sharing five quick tips for creating a YouTube video that not only helps you sell your art, but also gives plenty of value to your viewers.

1. Learn what your audience needs

To figure out what your target audience is looking for, start by viewing the stat counter of your main website or blog (try Google Analytics if you don’t have a stat program set up already). his will tell you where your audience is coming from, what keywords they typed into the search engines to find you, and where they went once they landed on their search page.

You can also figure out what your target audience wants by simply asking them. Hold polls on your blog, ask an open-ended question on your Facebook fan page, or create an entire post on your blog asking your readers and art collectors, what they’d like to see more of.

Start making a list of the things you see, combining the information you get from your stats page, and what people are telling you. Then, use a keyword search tool like Wordtracker.com or Google’s keyword tool.

Just type in some of the words or phrases on your list, or words related to your business, and see how many searches people are doing for those topics.

If a word or phrase gets over 30K searches, it’s a good bet that a video on that topic will be well-received.

2. Decide on your marketing style

You already know what type of artist you are, but do you know what type of marketer you are?

When creating your videos, it’s important to think about what type of person are you by nature and then incorporate that person into your video marketing. Are you funny? Are you serious?

Do you prefer to be behind the camera or in front of it?

Are you more comfortable showing your art collectors what you do, and what to do with your art once they’ve purchased it. . . or do you prefer teaching others how to do what you do?

Focus on your strengths, and build a video around who YOU are. You’ll end up with the most authentic video when you do.

3. Write and rehearse your script

Once you figure out the style of videos you want to create, it’s time to write your script.

Sure, you can wing it, but if you take the time to gather your thoughts, then write them out, you’ll be able to see where the flaws are in your presentation and fix them so that you deliver a polished video every time.

Creating a script eliminates awkward pauses and allows your personality to show through—which makes you appear more real, more authentic, more interesting, and more entertaining.

4. Tell your viewers what to do next

Once you’ve created the video, it’s important that you give your viewers a reason to either stay connected, or purchase your art.

So always end your videos with a “call to action”—ask them to subscribe to your video channel, visit your website or blog, or sign up for your newsletter. Maybe even all three! Give them options if you’d like, but always ASK.

5. Stay consistent

If you’re serious about video marketing, make sure you create at least one new video per month, and post it on, or near, the same date each month.

You can do it more frequently if you like, but in the end, it doesn’t matter how many videos you have uploaded, or how often you upload videos to your YouTube channel. What matters is quality.

If marketing your art through YouTube videos appeals to you at all, take some time to really think about it. Try a short video or two, to practice.

Then start with step 1, and work your way down. Follow each of the steps and you’ll end up with a quality video that meets your audience’s needs while bringing you repeat viewers—viewers who just might turn into collectors of your art as well.
