How many Imagekind Artists Pay for a Pro or Platinum Membership?

Published Jun. 28th 2007

Last month I wrote an article on how many artist members Imagekind has (along with two other art websites). Today I’m going to tell you how many of those are paying members.

I’d suggest reading the original article, otherwise, here’s a quick review. In May I learned how to use Google to count all Imagekind artist pages on the internet.

Just by typing in site:http://imagekind.com/memberprofile, Google will return the total number of Imagekind members.

Imagekind ArtistsToday, for example, that search shows 4,820 Imagekind artists.

After I published my findings, additional questions were brought up by artists at the onlinevisualartists forum, including this one: “How many pro and platinum members of Imagekind are there?”

I was curious as well, so I went back to Google. Eventually I found a search query that did what I wanted. Of course, as I’ve said before, there’s no guarantee that these Google-generated numbers are accurate, but I do think they’re pretty close.

I’ve also decided not to disclose the actual search term this time because I’d like to use it again (with other art websites too) so it’s probably better if they don’t know exactly how I’m doing it.

The results however, I’m happy to share.

Imagekind paying membersAccording to Google, Imagekind has just over 1000 paying artists; either pro or platinum.

That’s 22% of Imagekind’s total membership paying either $7.99 or $11.99 per month. But what do these numbers actually tell us? Two things, at least, although there could be more.

First, that Imagekind makes somewhere around $10,000 per month from membership fees (not a lot considering what it must cost to run Imagekind).

And second, that at this point almost 80% of Imagekind artists are either A) still trying out the service, B) satified with just one gallery, or C) are beginning artists or hobby artists rather than professionals who make a living from art sales.

Which one do you think fits the bill? Feel free to let me know and stay tuned for more updates as these statistics develop.
