Matt Glover of ChewingPencils is hosting an online contest during the month of January while he takes some time off from his blog.
The contest is simple – enter a small, one-panel gag cartoon on any subject. The required dimensions are 5cm wide by 8cm tall, and that’s where the difficulty comes in.
I tossed around a few ideas, and finally settled on this one:

If I had to give it a title, I’d call it Office Karma, or maybe Paper beats Scissor. : )
Artistically, I wanted something that didn’t require any text, and I liked how this composition filled up the height of the 5×8 panel. You’ll also notice strong geometric lines, which is something my art always seems to have in it. I guess I just like structure.
In an effort to defy that internal desire for order, I deliberately left this cartoon more scribbly than my weekly Bachelor of Arts comic strip. Although it’s nice to end up with a hand-drawn feel, I don’t know that I could do that for a full comic strip.
Let me know what you think – I’d love to hear your feedback.
If you’d like to enter Matt’s competition, there are just a few rules which you can read here.
More importantly, the deadline to enter is the end of December; so if you’re interested, get drawing!

It used to be that I'd enter art competitions or juried shows a lot. Whenever I could, for the most part. These days, I'm much more casual about it. I'm not sure whether they got to be more effort than I wanted, or if that type of competition just doesn't matter as much now as it did when I wa. . .
