Canadian artist Linda Jenetti’s gorgeous landscape paintings walk the line between abstract and realism—giving the viewer a deeper glimpse into the changing light and patterns found in nature.

5th Line, Mulmur is a great first example of Linda’s skill at capturing nature in oil.

Certainly this particular landscape—with it’s colorful fields and well-composed viewpoint—tends more toward realism, but it still incorporates abstraction!

Notice the subtle, directional brushstrokes seen around the edges of the canvas. . . they work wonderfully to pull the eye back into the center of the composition, and convey a feeling of windswept hills in the middle distance, and rustling leaves and grass in the foreground.

In this next painting, April, there may be even a bit more abstraction seen in the brightly-colored bushes at the banks of this snow-melt river:

Linda’s active, varied brushstrokes lend a rushing movement to the river, too! You can see it in the white foam bubbling over those shallow rapids, and the blue shadows trailing across the water’s surface which almost seem to move before your eyes.

Last but not least, Winter Patterns takes us almost entirely into the abstract, with cold white snow drifts, icy dark shadows, and the barest hints of stark foliage.

I love the bright blue reflected here and there (no doubt inspired by the crisp winter sky shimmering from the icy, sun-lit ground) and the way that the entire painting simply feels like winter, without spelling out everything exactly.
